Manisha Koirala recalls hypocrisy of 90's Bollywood; says, “Actresses are not meant to be drinking alcohol”

Manisha Koirala has never hesitated to discuss her professional and personal experiences in Bollywood. In a recent interview with Filmfare, the actor discussed the misogyny that dominated the Indian cinema business in the 1990s. Manisha revealed that female actresses were required to deny using alcohol and conceal their dating life at the time.

Recalling her experiences in 1990s, the actress said, “At the time of Saudagar, there was a coke mixed with vodka, and I was told by people around me not not tell people that I am drinking vodka because actresses are not meant to be drinking alcohol. I was told to say that I'm drinking coke. I learnt that new thing. I told my mom, ‘I am drinking coke', and she knew I put vodka in it and she said, ‘Listen, if you are drinking vodka, say you are drinking vodka, don't say you are drinking coke, don't lie for such small little things'. If I was dating somebody, I am dating somebody. You want to judge me? Go ahead and judge me but that's me, this is me and I lead my life on my own terms.”

She further opined, “I faced some flak for it because in those days, the heroes could have many girlfriends, and they were called macho men, but the actress was supposed to be this, ‘no no no, nobody is touching me’ and ‘we are very untouched.’ It was also misunderstood that (she is) very easy or easy girl. But I took it on my stride. Just because I have a personal life or I have a boyfriend doesn’t mean I am going to be unprofessional in my life. I love my work. We had some very warped value system for actresses, which didn’t go well with me.”

On the work front, Manisha made her debut with Subhash Ghai’s Saudagar. She been praised for her debut on OTT with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.

Vikrant Massey-starrer The Sabarmati Report postponed; won’t clash with Ajay Devgn-starrer Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha on August 2

Vikrant Massey’s popularity got a boost with the surprise success of 12th Fail (2023). Hence, his next theatrical release, The Sabarmati Report, is much awaited. The film was all set to release on May 3 but it was postponed to August 2. It now seems that Vikrant’s fans and admirers will have to wait a little longer. As per sources, The Sabarmati Report has been further pushed.

A source told Bollywood Hungama, “The makers are looking at a new release date. The film is now expected to release in September or October 2024. The makers will announce the new release date in a week or two. The exhibitors, too, would be informed about The Sabarmati Report’s postponement.”

A few days ago, Bollywood Hungama broke the news that Ajay Devgn-starrer Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, which was all set to release on July 5, has been pushed ahead and would now arrive in cinemas on August 2. It would have led to a three-way clash on the first Friday of August as Janhvi Kapoor-starrer Ulajh is also scheduled for a release in theatres on August 2.

Besides Vikrant Massey, The Sabarmati Report also stars Raashii Khanna and Ridhi Dogra. It is a political thriller about two reporters investigating the burning of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra on February 27, 2002. It is produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa R Kapoor, Amul V Mohan and Anshul Mohan and directed by Ranjan Chandel.

In April 2024, Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report that The Sabarmati Report won’t be able to make it in cinemas on May 3. A source told us, “The Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) Examining Committee saw the film and had objections to certain scenes. Also, fearing that it might violate the model code of conduct as laid down by the Election Commission of India, it has been advised that it should be released after the last phase of elections, which will take place on June 1.”

SCOOP: Srikanth director Tushar Hiranandani reshoots certain portions of Vikrant Massey-starrer The Sabarmati Report

The month of May brought some relief to the exhibitors thanks to the Rajkummar Rao-starrer Srikanth. It was one of the few major releases of the month and did exceptionally well in cinemas. It also made its director Tushar Hiranandani someone to watch out for. It has now come to light that Tushar has already moved on to his next project. As per a source, he is reshooting certain portions of the Vikrant Massey-starrer The Sabarmati Report.

A source told Bollywood Hungama, “The film is not going for a massive reshoot. The producers felt that some scenes could come out strongly and also, they thought of roping in Tushar Hiranandani for the reshoot. The actors, too, readily came on board.”

In April 2024, Bollywood Hungama reported that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had expressed reservations that certain moments in the film could hurt the sentiments of a section of the moviegoers and hence, the makers had toyed with the idea of reshooting the film. The source, however, has no information on whether the film is being reshot for this reason or some other factor.

Back then, Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report that The Sabarmati Report wouldn’t be able to make it in cinemas on May 3. This was a time when the Lok Sabha Elections were going on and besides objections to some scenes, the CBFC also feared that it might violate the model code of conduct as laid down by the Election Commission of India.

Saqib Saleem reveals that Sonakshi Sinha featured in a song in the Salman Khan-starrer Race 3: “It never made it to the final cut”

Sonakshi Sinha was in the news extensively last month after she got married to her long-time boyfriend, Zaheer Iqbal. As expected, her wedding bash was a star-studded one and it kept the social media buzzing. A month before, in May, Sonakshi again hogged the limelight with the acclaim she received for her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grand web series, Heeramandi. And it seems like if all goes well, Sonakshi Sinha will also be the talking point in the month of July. Kakuda is her first release after marriage and her co-star Saqib Saleem, in an interview, shared some interesting information.

Saqib Saleem revealed that Kakuda was not her first film with Sonakshi Sinha. She had shot for a special dance number for the multi-starrer Race 3 (2018). However, it was axed by the makers.

Saqib Saleem told Mid-Day, “Technically, this is the first time we are sharing screen space, but we had done a song together for Race 3 that never made it to the final cut.” Interestingly, Bollywood Hungama, way back in March 2018, was the first one to break the news that Sonakshi will feature in a song in Race 3. As per our report, the grand number was filmed in the Middle East.

Saqib further said, “Sonakshi is a no-frills actor. She comes on set, performs the minute you say action, and when pack-up is called, she sits in her car and goes back home. She is the most professional actor I have come across. I have tremendous respect for her, even more now that I have worked with her.”

Besides Saqib Saleem and Sonakshi Sinha, Kakuda also stars Riteish Deshmukh. While Sonakshi plays Saqib’s fiancĂ©e, Riteish essays the role of a ghost hunter. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar of Munjya (2024) fame, Kakuda will be released directly on Zee5 on July 12.

The drama is set against the ravishing landscape of Rajasthan and follows the story of a father-daughter duo. "Roohi, a female detective, is sent to a small town in Rajasthan to probe the first case of her career as a lead investigator. "Collaborating with such dedicated professionals, who care deeply about filmmaking, is truly exciting. In an interview with India Today, Junaid said that his father, Aamir Khan, mother, Reena Dutta, and sister, Ira Khan, are "very supportive and very encouraging even in their criticism."

Junaid Khan about family support

He said, "We don’t really talk about films so much. But I know that Ira (my sister) unconditionally supports me. I'm blessed because I come from a very supportive family. Also, they don't shy away from saying it like it is. Even Papa (Aamir) will say, 'Look, I feel this, but you should do what you want.' The same is with mom. So, yeah, I think everybody is very supportive and very encouraging even in their criticism.”

Junaid on Aamir’s unique acting style

Junaid also responded to a question about his height gap with Aamir and how his acting technique differs from his father's. He continued, “I guess that is a compliment (laughs). No, I don't know how to answer that in the sense that it's not necessarily a conscious thing. I guess as performers, we're all different. He's a fantastic actor. A lot of times, between two of his own films, you would not be able to tell it's the same person. So, yes, we are very different as performers.”

About Maharaj

Junaid played Karsandas Mulji, a social reformer, in the film Maharaj. Maharaj digs into the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, one of India's most famous judicial battles, and focuses on the life of Karsanda. High Praise for the Original Film Kill has impressed action movie veterans, with Chad Stahelski (producer for 87Eleven Entertainment) calling it "one of the most vivid, wild, and creative action movies I’ve seen recently." He praised director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat's "relentless action sequences" and expressed his excitement about bringing the story to a wider audience through the English remake. A Collaboration Between Renowned Studios The remake will be a joint effort between 87Eleven Entertainment and the original production companies, Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment. Both Dharma Productions, known for their global presence under the leadership of Karan Johar, and Sikhya Entertainment, the award-winning studio behind India's first Oscar win (The Elephant Whisperers), are excited about the project.

In a joint statement, the producers said they are "thrilled that 87Eleven Entertainment will produce a remake of our film in English." They view this collaboration as a "big win for Indian cinema" and a testament to the film's potential for international appeal.

Vicky Kaushal to team up with Karan Aujla for a Punjabi anthem in Bad Newz: Report

Vicky Kaushal's fans are in for a double treat! Not only will they see the actor on the big screen soon, but they can also expect him to break into a dance with a brand-new Punjabi number. Known for his infectious enthusiasm and love for Punjabi music, Kaushal has collaborated with singer Karan Aujla for a party track in the upcoming film Bad Newz. This marks Aujla's much-anticipated Bollywood debut after several viral hits over the past few years.

As reported by Mid-day, videos of Vicky Kaushal grooving to Punjabi songs like Karan Aujla's ‘Softly’ have previously gone viral on social media, leaving netizens wondering when he would appear in a peppy dance number next.  Bad Newz seems to answer their prayers, with the upcoming release of the party track featuring Kaushal and Aujla. This collaboration promises to be a highlight of the film, especially considering Kaushal's reputation as an "OG Punjabi munda" (original Punjabi dude). For the same anthem, Karan has arrived in India.

Over the past two years, Karan Aujla’s catchy verses and rhythmic flow have made him a sensation. His songs like ‘Try Me’, ‘Softly’ and many more have caught the attention of music lovers. He was most recently seen in two collaborations with Badshah – ‘God Damn’ and ‘Players’.

The buzz around Bad Newz has been growing steadily since the trailer's release last week. Directed by Anand Tiwari, the film is a rom com starring a fresh trio: Kaushal, Triptii Dimri, and Ammy Virk. The trailer's quirky premise – Dimri's character discovering she's pregnant with twins from two different fathers, played by Kaushal and Virk – has piqued audience curiosity. Bad Newz will explore the rare phenomenon of heteropaternal superfecundation, where twins are conceived from different fathers.

Produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, Amritpal Singh Bindra, and Anand Tiwari, Bad Newz is all set to hit theaters on July 19, 2024. ALSO READ: Bad Newz Trailer: Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri and Ammy Virk tackle rare case of twins with different fathers in twisted comedy
