Kalki Koechlin quits Twitter amid Israel-Hamas war; says, “I have had enough”

Amid the escalating tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict, Bollywood actor Kalki Koechlin took a bold step by deleting her X (formerly known as Twitter) account, citing the proliferation of disinformation and hate on the social media platform. The actor revealed her decision on Instagram, where she posted a screenshot before removing the application from her phone.

In her Instagram post, she conveyed her frustration with the barrage of hate, disinformation, and the overwhelming sense of helplessness that came with incessant scrolling through troubling content. However, what truly prompted Kalki to draw a definitive line and sever ties with Twitter was the disturbing content related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The actor articulated her stance, saying, “Had to do this today. The hate and disinformation, the doom scrolling, the helplessness. But what really crossed the line for me, what really made me draw a boundary was the denial or the justification of Palestinian children murdered in the thousands or the denial or glorification of Israeli women being raped, tortured and murdered. I have had enough.”

14 years of Paa: “After the make-up, Amitabh Bachchan couldn’t eat, drink or use the bathroom,” recalls R Balki

Amitabh Bachchan playing his son Abhishek Bachchan’s son… It’s still hard to believe!!! Fourteen years after its release, the director R Balki of Paa wonders at his own audacity.

A happy film on a child named Auro suffering from a rare genetic disorder which tends to age him four times faster than normal? How does Balki manage it? It could have something to do with his deep but never burdensome understanding of the single-most critical mystery of existence... That you make of life what you want it to be.

In many ways Auro reminded me of Anand. In Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Anand, Rajesh Khanna enters into people's mildly troubled lives, fills them with joie de vivre and vanishes into the oblivion of mortality.

Auro is a far more complicated act. Amitabh Bachchan has to transform into a rapidly aging child, throw the manipulative tantrums of an adolescent and yet keeping from appearing caricatural or grotesque. The actor manages all of this, and more, with a fluency that makes you want to grope for new superlatives. Mr Bachchan's Auro act qualifies as one of the finest, most nuanced and sharp performances ever in the history of the motion-picture.

It's hard to define in words the warm knowledge of the inner workings of a 12-year-old child who knows he’s dying, that Mr Bachchan brings into this film.

Paa could be bereft if not orphaned without the Bachchan's counter-domineering presence where he simply vanishes into Auro's wrinkled body. From that credibly modulated voice to the sagging walk, he makes the child's inner beauty mock his ugly exterior in almost a spiritual synthesis of soul and body.

Shudders director R Balki, “It took the make-up man four hours every morning. Once the makeup was done, Amitji couldn’t eat, drink or go to the bathroom. We were all petrified about his health. But this is not an ordinary man. He went through the long and painful process day after day for four hours. I was recently looking at Paa for a showreel to be prepared on Amitji for the film festival in Goa. And I said to myself, ‘How the hell did we do this?’ Because everyone except me and Amitji thought the idea was not workable.”

Balki remembers flying to Hyderabad for Mr Bachchan’s look test. “Amitji had to do the last day’s shooting of Shoojit Sircar’s Johnny Walker (which never got released) in Hyderabad. He asked me to come to the Novotel hotel. I reached with my cinematographer P C Sreeram. PC very categorically said what I was attempting — to cast Amitji as Abhishek’s progeria-stricken son — was not possible. Since I trust PC’s judgment more than my own, I decided we would call it off.”

But then something happened. “PC got on top of a table in the conference room of the Novotel and shot Amitji from above, with his head prominently in the frame. Then PC said, ‘Now it will work.’ That’s how we made him look much smaller than his tall height. We shot from the above, lots close-ups of his eyes, etc,” recalled Balki.

The unbelievable prosthetics went a long way in enhancing the credibility of the theme. Recalled Balki, “We had no idea of what the prosthetics would do to Amitji. That it would actually transform him into the character Auro was not something we planned. Each morning it took four hours for the prosthetics to be put on. After that Amitji couldn’t eat anything, only sip liquids with a straw until the shooting for the day was done late in the evening. At 64, Amitji was the portrait of patience.”

Abhishek had a lot of questions on the sets. Recalled Balki, “He would ask many questions about what we were doing. Mr Bachchan who could barely talk through his prosthetics would say, ‘Abhishek, just act.’ I think Abhishek gave a very fine performance as his father’s father.”

Vidya Balan, who played Mr Bachchan’s mother, had serious reservations about the role. “But once she saw her screen son, all her apprehensions evaporated. What she saw was Auro, the character, not Amitabh Bachchan, the actor,” says Balki.

Balki also got Jaya Bachchan to appear at the start of Paa, announcing the cast and crew. Laughed Balki, “When Amitji saw Jayaji reading out the credit titles he exclaimed, ‘She looks so beautiful.’”

What inspired Balki to be so audacious time after time? “Mr Bachchan, of course every time I team up with him, I want to do something he has never attempted before. What we pulled off was incredible. Of course, he insists we do something mass oriented. But again, I will do something with him that everyone would reject as impossible,” said Balki.

Rakhee to make a comeback with Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee's Bengali movie Amar Boss

Renowned for illuminating the silver screen for decades, Rakhee Gulzar is making a comeback in Bengali films after a hiatus. Her last theatrical release in Bengal was Rituparno Ghosh’s Shubho Mahurat (2003) even though she was seen in Gautam Halder’s Nirban, which did rounds of several film festivals in 2019 as it didn't have a theatrical release. It thus clocks two decades of seeing Rakhee on the big screen in a Bengali film. Nirban was included in the Indian Panorama section of the 50th edition of the International Film Festival of India and was later screened at the Kolkata International Film Festival in 2019.

Rakhee Gulzar will portray the protagonist in Amar Boss, directed by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee, with shooting expected to commence on January 3, 2024. The film also features Shiboprosad and Srabanti Chatterjee. Reflecting on her quiet life in Panvel during KIFF (2019), Rakhee shared her experiences of visiting Kolkata anonymously and exploring the local markets. She expressed joy in being able to move around without much recognition. She also spoke about being choosy, “I used to work in cinema when it was very different. But I have no regrets about stopping, about not working with directors I have not wrked with. My favourite director is Tapan Sinha, I love the way he made films for everyone. As an actress, I have had the same beliefs.”

Nandita Roy expressed her excitement about working with Rakhee Gulzar, stating, “I have great regards for Rakhee di and wanted to work with her for long. Amar Boss was conceived keeping her in mind. We are delighted about getting this opportunity to work with her.”

Shiboprosad added, “We have been in touch with Rakhee di for quite sometime now. She has seen most of our films and said her favourite is Haami. She is not just a gem of an actress but also a warm person, a straight talker… someone who shares so much love for the animals as well. She has many, many qualities that are truly mesmerizing. We are proud to work with her.”

Notably, Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee’s Puja film, Raktabeej, which has been immensely successful at the box office and has garnered praises galore, marked the comeback of yet another veteran actor --- Victor Banerjee. The film is set to complete 50 days in theatres soon.

Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Animal is a RARE film in which the title card appears after nearly 55 minutes

The much-awaited film Animal has finally released today and has several unique and rare aspects. To begin with, it has a run time of 203 minutes (that is 3 hours and 23 minutes) and hence, is the longest Hindi film in a long time. Despite the long length and ‘A’ certificate, it’s buzz is high and is all set to take a flying off. Now, Bollywood Hungama has learnt that it has another unique distinction.

The title card in Animal is displayed nearly 55 minutes after the film begins. This is quite rare as usually, the title of the film is mentioned in the first 10 minutes. There have been films like Omkara (2006), Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl (2011) etc. in which the title appeared on screen between 20 and 30 minutes. Then there are some films in which the title comes only during the intermission point. No One Killed Jessica (2011) is a classic example in which instead of ‘Interval’ or ‘Intermission Point’, the film’s name is displayed, that too in the form of a newspaper headline.

Animal, however, stands out. The title appears at a significant juncture that too nearly 50 minutes before the intermission point. Nevertheless, it gives a nice touch to the film and goes well with the novelty value that the film offers.

Besides Ranbir Kapoor, Animal also stars Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Rashmika Mandanna. It is directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and is the story of an obsessed son avenging an assassination attempt on his father.

It’s the first step to normalise this taboo topic in society.

Bold Care provides science-backed solutions for intimate health issues, including premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction. Beyond this, Bold Care's product portfolio includes India’s fastest-growing condom range, water-based lubes, and a selection of wellness products. This is not the first time that Ranveer Singh will be spreading awareness about sexual wellness. He has in fact been committed to this cause for a long time. Back in 2014, he surprised everyone when he appeared in a series of condom ads, becoming the first ever Bollywood actor to do so, for which he won immense praise.

Rajat Jadhav, CEO at Bold Care shares, “We're absolutely thrilled to finally announce Ranveer as a co-owner at Bold Care! His involvement over the past year has been nothing short of incredible, deeply engaging in every facet of our business. This is going to be an iconic partnership, something India hasn’t seen before!"

He further adds, “Bold Care has always championed the cause of normalizing conversations around men's health issues, especially sexual health. We're truly dedicated to offering effective and stigma-free solutions. From the very beginning, Ranveer has been passionately aligned with this vision and now, as we embark on this exhilarating new chapter together, we're more energized than ever to make a significant impact. Here's to the next big leap with Ranveer on board – it's going to be an amazing ride!”

Co-owner Ranveer Singh shares, “I am pleased to come on board as the face and co-owner of Bold Care. Together we are committed towards normalising conversations about sexual health and wellness, a topic that traditionally comes with stigma and taboo. People, especially men are misinformed and shy to seek help. With this, we are doing our bit to help to bring about a positive change in society.”

He further adds, “I have always felt that this category needs more of openness and acceptance in our society. That thought led to me endorsing a condom brand at a relatively early stage of my career. This time around it’s a greater investment that one is making. We are probably one of the most sexually active societies in the world. This needs to be done. “

Since its launch, Bold Care has successfully processed more than 15 lakh orders, demonstrating its growing trust and innovative presence in the men's health sector. This customer trust reflects the company's status as one of India's rapidly evolving new-age brands. ALSO READ: SCOOP: After Durex condoms, Ranveer Singh to endorse sexual wellness tablets?

Ranveer Singh on ‘scepticism’ towards Don 3 after Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan: “Continuing the legacy of two of our greatest superstars…”

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh was honoured at the third edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia. Following his panel in Jeddah and meeting fans, he sat down for a conversation to talk about several topics including him taking on the role of Don in the Farhan Akhtar directorial. The previous versions were headlined by megastars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer is aware of the scepticism.

Speaking to Deadline, Ranveer Singh said, “I’m hoping to make Don my own and give it my spin, my interpretation. It is the handing over of the baton of one of the most loved and revered franchises of Hindi cinema. The significance of that is not lost on me. When the announcement was made, as expected, it came with its share of scepticism. But throughout the history of cinema, this has happened. Even as recently as perhaps when the Bond franchise changed hands and they announced Daniel Craig as the new Bond, it came with its fair share of scepticism. So, this is only natural.”

The 1978 version of Don was headlined by Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role as Don and Vijay. The film was written by Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar and helmed by Chandra Barot. Farhan Akhtar then directed by Don in 2007 with Shah Rukh Khan in the double role and a sequel in 2011. Talking about the third installment, Ranveer said “Taking the baton forward in this franchise and continuing the legacy of two of our greatest superstars – the significance of that is not lost on me. So, I will give it my best shot and you will see the very best of me and I will put my best foot forward for Don undoubtedly.”

Farhan Akhtar and Ranveer Singh are aiming for Don 3 for 2025. Meanwhile, on the work front, Ranveer Singh will be seen in Rohit Shetty's Cop Universe Singham Again alongside Deepika Padukone. He has reportedly signed Baiju Bawra with Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
