SCOOP: Karan Johar SHELVES his ambitious project Takht starring Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Alia Bhatt

In our country, viewers don’t necessarily know most of the film directors. But Karan Johar is a rare one in this regard. He’s quite well-known and his mere presence as the director of a film can up the hype of a film by many notches. All his films six directorials till now - Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006), My Name Is Khan (2010), Student Of The Year (2012) and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) - were not just huge hits but are fondly remembered even today for its plot, execution, performances and music. As a result, there was a lot of excitement among moviegoers and the industry at large when Karan announced his next directorial, Takht, in August 2018. The fact that it was a grand, period drama and that it featured as many as 7 prominent actors – Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Anil Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal and Bhumi Pednekar – had added to the hype considerably.

Therefore, those eagerly waiting for the film would be disappointed to know that Karan Johar, with a heavy heart, has decided to shelve this ambitious venture. A source reveals, “There are several reasons why it has happened. To begin with, it’s too costly a film. Its budget is expected to be around Rs. 250-300 crores. Like every other producer, even Karan had to bear losses due to Covid-19. Also, his expensive films like Brahmastra and Liger are already in production or awaiting release, along with his mid-sized ones like Shershaah, Dostana 2, Jug Jugg Jeeyo and Shakun Batra’s next. Adding Takht to this list won’t be a good idea.”

The source adds, “Since the very beginning, no studio was on board for the film. It was believed that Fox Star Studios was backing Takht because of its partnership with Dharma. But the fact is that Fox was never on board. Karan tried pitching Takht to other studios but his efforts proved futile.”

And that’s not all. The source continues, “Takht is based on Mughal history. The current political climate is volatile and you never know when things can get ugly. We all saw what happened with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat (2018). Karan felt that there’s no way he can risk taking such a project in such times as a lot of money would then be at stake. As a result, Karan Johar has decided to shelve Takht for now. He might revive the project maybe after a couple of years.”

The source reveals before signing off, “The managers of the actors have been informally told about this decision. Meanwhile, Karan Johar has decided to rope in two of the actors of Takht – Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt – for a love story. It’s a space that Karan is familiar with and moreover, it’s also a safe bet.”

A trade expert is unhappy with these turn of events. “Takht looked like a winner. What star cast! Also, it surely would have been a visually spectacular film and something that could have worked big time in cinemas. I hope after a few years, Karan has a rethink and goes ahead with the film.”

Last year, Alia Bhatt shot another song but Bhansali opted to finish the crucial parts before kicking off more dance numbers.

Sunny Deol played a major role in allowing theatres to operate at 100% occupancy; here's how

He may have been known to roar the loudest when it comes to his on-screen appearances. However when it comes to his real life deeds, he is ensuring that his work speaks the loudest. That can well be seen from the fact that even though two days have gone by since the government announced 100% occupancy rule in theatres, there hasn’t been any noise made around the man who actually made it possible. It is Sunny Deol, the actor and the MP, whose initiatives at the highest order of the government machinery made it possible.

Sunny Deol played a major role in allowing theatres to operate at 100% occupancy; here's how

"It was Sunny Deol who led the delegation from the film industry and met Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of India, Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Amit Khare, Secretary, I & B Ministry and Anurag Thakur, Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs, a few days back. He requested them to consider the request for allowing theatres to function at greater than 50% occupancy, and preferably at 100% itself," informs our source.  "He was joined by Kamal Gianchandani, President, Multiplex Association of India, Sanjeev Bijli, MD PVR and Nitin Tej Ahuja, CEO of The Producers Guild of India," the source added.

They explained the situation in detail that how the whole exhibition sector was suffering since producers couldn’t afford to release their films at 50% occupancy rule in theatres while there was fear psychosis amongst audiences too with a such a rule being enforced. Considering that everything else had normalised, be it the dining or other social gatherings, it was prudent that theatres too are allowed to operate full house.

“The Ministers were kind enough to patiently listen to the argument and assured Sunny sir that they would take this into consideration and pass on a resolution soon,” our source continues. “At the end of the day, the whole movie business helps everyone in the supply chain. It is only going to help the economy further as the money generated by sales of movie tickets keep the business going for one and all," the source added.

The results were there to be seen as within 72 hours of this meeting happening, the government took a decision to allow 100% occupancy, post which the ruling was drafted.

No wonder, the industry is elated.

Said Kamal Gianchandani, President, Multiplex Association of India, “On behalf of all MAI (Multiplex Association of India) members, I would like to thank Shri Sunny Deol ji for his tireless and unwavering efforts in getting back the 100% capacity for cinemas. His leadership, combined with his commitment to serve the best long term interest of the entire filmed entertainment sector, has played a vital role in putting the film industry back on the path to recovery and growth. I am confident that film industry community will continue to benefit from his valued leadership and counsel.”

When tried to contact the actor, Deol said he didn't want to talk about it. When probed further he said, “I am glad that this could happen and I really hope things are back on track for the entertainment industry.” Sunny Deol has definitely done the job as a senior politician as well as the industry veteran for decades. Now the onus is on the film industry to churn out exciting movies and ensure returns at the box office.

Aamir Khan wants no hindrance, turns off his phone until the release of Laal Singh Chaddha

In this digital age, where we are constantly checking our devices every fifteen minutes, it’s hard to imagine life without it! But leave it to superstar Aamir Khan to do the unthinkable – the actor has decided to turn off his cell phone till the release of Laal Singh Chaddha.

Aamir Khan wants no hindrance, turns off his phone until the release of Laal Singh Chaddha

The decision to fo rgo his phone stemmed from the fact that the actor felt it constantly interfered with the manner in which he conducts his work. While it’s well known that Aamir Khan gets under the skin of his characters like none other and fully surrenders to the projects he is working on, he doesn’t want his phone to become a hindrance while he does the same with Laal Singh Chaddha and hence takes this step.

The film is by far the most anticipated release this year and keeping to tradition, this Aamir Khan starrer will release on Christmas like the superstar’s other blockbusters. Laal Singh Chaddha also reunites Aamir and Kareena Kapoor Khan, who last worked together in the cult film 3 Idiots.

While Aamir Khan boasts of a 100 percent hit ratio when it comes to his Christmas releases – whether it was PK, Dangal, Dhoom 3, PK, Taare Zameen Par, or Ghajini, he never takes it for granted and tries to supersede the effort he puts in with each project.

The actor, who is dedicating his undivided attention to Laal Singh Chaddha, is in an intense phase of the shoot and post-production and will communicate with others in this phase, if necessary, via his team.

Focussing on what’s important and living in the here and now isn’t just being a perfectionist, it’s what icons are made of and that’s exactly what Aamir Khan proves to be with every passing year!

Last year, Bollywood Hungama was the first to inform that Shah Rukh Khan had begun shooting for Pathan, an action-packed drama. Deepika Padukone and John Abraham are a part of the film.

EXCLUSIVE: Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham starrer Pathan to be shot at Burj Khalifa

According to the sources, “Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham are set to shoot action-packed scenes at Burj Khalifa. The actors are at war in the film and their stunt doubles have been filming some intense and elaborate chase sequences on the streets of Dubai. This past weekend, they were shooting at Coca Cola Arena with moving cars and buses. Now, they will move to Burj Khalifa and we can expect some Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol level scenes. They will be shooting inside the tower unlike most of the Bollywood films that have been shot outside of the tallest building!”

Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone play RAW agents with Dimple Kapadia essaying the role of the head of the department. The elaborate chase sequences will be shot between John and Shah Rukh in Abu Dhabi.

In November 2020, some photos were leaked of Shah Rukh Khan sporting long hair as he began shooting for the film. It seems like he will sport an edgier look since he plays an agent, a man on a mission.

With Pathan, Shah Rukh Khan will make an appearance on the screen almost three years after his last release Zero which was directed by Aanand L Rai.

As government allows 100% occupancy in cinemas, release of Vineet Kumar Singh's Aadhaar postponed

On the evening of Saturday January 30, the Union government put out a directive that cinema halls can run with 100% occupancy. And as expected, it led to a wave of cheer among exhibitors, trade and industry at large. Post-lockdown, cinema halls were allowed to open from October 15. However, they were told to operate at 50% occupancy. Hence, alternate seats were asked to be left vacant. The exhibition sector was constantly persuading the government that running theatres at half the occupancy was not feasible. Bollywood filmmakers, too, shied away from releasing their mid-sized and big-ticket films in such a scenario as they feared losses. But with the 100% occupancy being allowed, trade is already abuzz that very soon, a slew of announcements of release dates of biggies are going to take place.

As government allows 100% occupancy in cinemas, release of Vineet Kumar Singh's Aadhaar postponed

Meanwhile, Jio Studios, which was supposed to release Aadhaar on Friday February 5, have decided to postpone its release. Starring Vineet Kumar Singh, Sanjay Mishra and Saurabh Shukla, this Suman Ghosh-directed film is about the adventures of the first person in Jharkhand who gets an Aadhaar card made for him. It is backed by Manish Mundra’s Drishyam Films.

The spokesperson of Jio Studios confirmed that now the government has given the nod for full occupancy, they would want to bring their bigger films first. Hence, they have decided to push Aadhar to a later date. As per a report in a daily, Jio Studios has decided to release their bigger films like Roohi Afzana, starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor and Mimi, starring Kriti Sanon and Pankaj Tripathi, first. Both these films are also co-produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films.

On the other hand, the trade is hopeful that in a few days, the release date of the much-awaited Sooryavanshi would be unveiled. Starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, Sooryavanshi is directed by Rohit Shetty and is a part of his cop universe. There’s buzz in the trade that it’s scheduled to release on April 2. A decision will be taken once the makers reach a consensus with the multiplexes over issues like revenue sharing, OTT release, VPF etc.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali to revive Inshallah with Alia Bhatt and a different leading man

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is certainly not done with his aborted dream-project Inshallah, the love story that was to feature Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt. Making a flash-decision, he closed down Inshallah and quickly moved on to Gangubai Kathiawadi with Alia Bhatt in the title role.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali to revive Inshallah with new lead actor

But Inshallah remains in the back of Bhansali’s mind. “It is a beautiful simple timeless love story. Sanjay still wants to make it with Alia and a different leading man,” reveals a source close to the epic director.

The hero required for the part must be in the 50-plus category and a big star. Shah Rukh Khan is the obvious choice.

“But Shah Rukh Khan has already done a film – Gauri Shinde’s Dear Zindagi — with Alia. So the novelty of seeing the two generation-challenged superstars exchanging emotions is gone. But who knows! It may be SRK only.  The important thing is to make Inshallah exactly the way SLB had envisaged it. And he will.”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is stepping into the web zone now. And just like we expected, he is all set to turn heads and grab eyeballs with a magnum opus being planned for the digital platform. The mega budget series is actually a script that was initially planned as a feature film, starring Priyanka Chopra in the lead. Now, Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi have been roped in to play two leads, whereas talks are on with Vidya Balan as well.

SCOOP Kartik Aaryan to sign Sanjay Leela Bhansali's web series Heera Mandi

But the heroine centric film, that revolves around the life of courtesans and prostitutes during the Indo-Pak partition, also has many prominent male lead roles. SLB has already started discussion with a few actors. The source adds, "Kartik Aaryan and Bhansali have always discussed in teaming up for a film together. They have met a couple of times in the past as well but nothing worked out. Recently, he was spotted at the maverick filmmaker's office and apparently, SLB asked him if he would like to do a role in Heera Mandi."

Kartik was also offered a role in Gangubai Kathiawadi which he declined. Now it needs to be seen if he signs this one. But even if he does, it's majorly a woman dominated script but Kartik has a very edgy role to essay. But if Kartik agrees, this might be his second project on the digital platform after Ram Madhvani's Dhamaka which might have a direct to OTT release.
