"By God's grace I am in fine health. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned" - Sharmila Tagore

Ever since some alarming reports appeared about Sharmila Tagore not keeping good health, the legendary diva has been inundated with calls from anxious friends, relatives, and fans.

"By God's grace I am in fine health. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned" - Sharmila Tagore

Putting to rest all concerns about her health, Sharmila Tagore ji says, “By God’s grace I am in fine health. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned. Though I’m 76, I keep myself very busy reading, gardening, social engagements, and of course attending to my obligations at home. There is no time to brood .”

The past year’s lockdown also gave the highly versatile critically acclaimed actress an opportunity to watch all her films chronologically. “Many of my own films, I had never seen before. And I must say some of my old films like Choti Bahu and Badnaam Farishtay have withstood the test of time. I like Asit Sen’s Safar and Bhimsain’s Dooriyaan because I played a proper professional. This was so different from the conventional roles for heroines during those days. I like Anupama, Safar, Amar Prem, Talaash and Aradhana. Apur Sansar was a milestone and so was Devi. I got to work with Satyajit Ray in both.”

Sharmilaji’s own personal favourite performance remains the one she gave in the great Satyajit Ray’s Devi when she was just 14. “It is my own favourite film and performance. My life changed when I was introduced to Satyajit Ray. It was acting for me thereafter. But I kept telling myself I’d quit after every film. I saw myself in my first Hindi film Kashmir Ki Kali and I didn’t like myself. I said, one more film and I’m done. But it continued. But I left so many films: Khilona, Tere Mere Sapne, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, Aadmi Aur Insaan.... You have to appreciate the fact that acting is not the be-all end-all of my life. There is so much more to life. In any case, unlike Jaya (Bachchan) or Shabana (Azmi), who went to acting school, I was an accidental actress. I remember seeing Jaya at age 13 with her father, the distinguished journalist Tarun Kumar Bhaduri. Even at that age she was decked up, a rose in her hair and so on. She was very enamoured of the camera. She was destined to be an actress. I had no such aspirations. I actually wanted to go to Shanti Niketan. I wanted to be a dancer.”

Centre allows 100% seating capacity in theatres from February 1

Few days after the Ministry of Home Affairs announced that theatres across India can increase occupancy from the existing 50 %, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Saturday night announced that theatres will be allowed to run at full capacity starting February 1.

Centre allows 100% seating capacity in theatres from February 1

On Saturday night, the I&B ministry issued Standard Operating Procedures(SOPs)which have to be followed with the new guidelines. While the Centre has allowed to operate theatres with full capacity , States and UTs may propose additional measures as per field assessment. The general SOPs include that people maintain social distance at any given point, wear masks and theatres should have sanitisers at entry and exit points. Thermal screening of every visitor and staff is also mandatory.

Audiences may be encouraged to avoid movement during the intermission. Longer intermissions may be used to allow the audience seated in different rows of the auditorium to move in a staggered manner. Staggered show timings shall be followed for multiple screens to avoid crowding. Temperature setting of all air conditioning devices should be in the range of 24-30°C, among other precautionary measures.

These new set of guidelines will bring in relief for theatre owners and exhibitors and filmmakers who have been long awaiting to release their films in cinema halls. Earlier this month, Tamil movie Master became the first major Indian film to hit the theatres. Despite the 50% capacity in theatres, the film did exceptionally well at the box office.

In Bollywood, films like Sooryavanshi, '83, Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai are some of the major films that are awaiting release in theatres this year.

Amazon Prime Video postpones the release of The Family Man 2 after brouhaha over Mirzapur and Tandav

Following the beguiling brouhaha over two of its major series Mirzapur and Tandav, Amazon Prime Video has decided to indefinitely postpone the release of their next Big Fat Indian Series.  The Family Man Season 2 which was to stream from February 12 stands postponed for now. The trailer which was to release on January 19 will now be out closer to the new streaming date, whenever that may be.

Amazon Prime Video postpones the release of The Family Man 2 after brouhaha over Mirzapur and Tanda

Confirming this saddening development, a source very close to the project tells me, “It is true. The Family Man Season 2 has been postponed indefinitely, much to the disappointment  of Manoj Bajpayee and the co-director Raj-DK. The reason is, the brand Amazon has taken a beating in India with two of their most successful shows Mirzapur and  Tandav coming under the scanner for allegedly hurting popular sentiments. Amazon doesn’t feel the atmosphere is  conducive to the release of a big franchise like The Family Man.”

But The Family Man  has no controversial content at all?

Responds the source, “You  know that. I know that. But who knows what triggers off  an adverse reaction in the public? Amazon would rather wait for a more opportune time  to  release an important show like The Family Man.”

The source also adds that the co-director Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK have nothing to do with the  postponement. “Raj and DK have delivered the full series of  the second season  of  The Family Man  to Amazon. They have  nothing  to do with  the decision  to  hold back the series. As far as Raj and DK are concerned the series is ready for streaming whenever Amazon decides to do so. The co-directors have no intention of modifying anything in  the  second season because there is nothing even remotely objectionable in the  series.”

Govinda’s autobiography to be a multi-edition; says his story cannot be contained in a single book

Bollywood actor Govinda rose to fame with his impeccable comic timing and his unmatched dancing skills. He ruled the 90s with his brand of cinema- which was largely quirky and a mass entertainer. While he has witnessed success from the peak, he has also had his share of failure.

Govinda’s autobiography to be a multi-edition; says his story cannot be contained in a single book

Now, Govinda plans on telling his story in his own words. Talking to a tabloid, the actor said that he had decided early on that he would start writing his autobiography when he turns 57. Having reached that milestone last year, the actor who is fondly known as Chi Chi has started working on his memoir.

Govinda revealed that the autobiography will be a multi-edition as he feels that his story cannot be contained in a single book. He plans on having a book for each phase of his life; from his childhood years in a chawl to the empty phase of his life when he did not have much work. The Coolie No.1 actor wants to tell history like Raj Kapoor did through his characters.

While onscreen, Govinda was largely portrayed as the happy go lucky man; in real life he had his own share of controversies. When asked if the book will be a tell all, he said that one should never give away everything because then there will not be anything left to say. He believes that he got lucky by God's grace and became a star.

Not Ram, Hrithik Roshan to play Ravan in Madhu Mantena's 3D Ramayana starring Deepika Padukone?

Deepika Padukone and Hrithik Roshan have always maintained that they wanted to work together. But till date, they haven't been seen sharing screen space ever. But in 2021, it will all change and now, we hear that they have signed not one but two big projects together. Hrithik and Deepika have already announced their next - Siddharth Anand's Fighter which will showcase their jodi for the first time. Last week, there were reports that they are also starring in Madhu Mantena's version of Ramayana, that too in 3D.

Not Ram, Hrithik Roshan to play Ravan in Madhu Mantena's 3D Ramayana starring Deepika Padukone

Ever since the news went viral on the Internet, Kangana fans have targeted Hrithik and claimed he shouldn't play Ram on screen. Little do they know that Hrithik has a different role in the mytho-drama. A source shares, "Duggu had been in talks to play an important role in Deepika's Draupadi which was a modern retelling of the epic Mahabharat. But that film will happen later. Mantena is bankrolling Ramayana first and Hrithik will play Ravan's role in the epic period drama."

Incidentally, T-Series is also producing Adipurush which has Prabhas playing Ram, Kriti Sanon essaying Sita's role and Saif Ali Khan stepping in as Ravan. Now, it will be Hrithik vs Saif at the plexes as they play the same role in different projects. And what's more interesting? Hrithik and Saif will also be seen together in Vikram Vedha remake.

Mirzapur to go back to storyboard for season 3

With the folks of the real Mirzapur up in arms against being portrayed as gun-toting criminals in the fictional Mirzapur, the series is likely to go back to the storyboard for some serious revamping before Season 3 begins shooting.

Mirzapur to go back to storyboard for season 3

Among the changes that are likely to take place there may be a serious toning down of the verbal and visual violence which is to say, the characters won’t use gaalis as if they (the gaalis) were the only way to express rage (rage being the dominant emotion in the series, since everybody is angry all the time). In addition, the shoot-outs may not be that frequent.

But the better option is to rename the series and then reserve the rights to perpetrate the trademark mayhem.

Says one of the prominent actors from the series, “We haven’t really discussed the changes. But changes, there will be. When the first season came we didn’t have people from Mirzapur objecting to the series. But now, with protests there will be changes for sure. Dropping the title may be a last-ditch option to save the series.”

But if the series is not called Mirzapur, would it still have the same impact on viewers?

All these questions would now have to be explored in the light of the protests. One thing is for sure. You can’t have a series with the name of an actual town or city on the map and show it as a den of crime. There is hell to pay.

After Shakuntala Devi and Ludo, Sanya Malhotra’s Pagglait also takes the digital route; to stream on Netflix

Sanya Malhotra had a rocking debut with Dangal (2016), which was also the biggest hit of that year. She even got noticed with Badhaai Ho (2018), another huge grosser. However, it’s in 2020 when she really made her presence felt and added to her fan following. She rocked the show with Shakuntala Devi and even her unrecognizable look got praise. In Ludo, she arguably was a part of the best story of the film and her chemistry with Aditya Roy Kapur was electrifying. Interestingly, both these films were released digitally. While Shakuntala Devi premiered on Amazon Prime, Ludo was streamed on Netflix.

Interestingly, her next film, Meenakshi Sundareshwar, co-starring Abhimanyu Dassani and produced by Karan Johar, will also be a Netflix release. Revealed: Here’s why the Kartik Aaryan starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 shoot is delayed

If Kartik Aaryan has extra time on hand it is because Anees Bazmi’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 has been put on hold indefinitely. No, that’s not the director Anees playing it safe on behalf of his entire team. It’s one of the film’s leading ladies Tabu who has refused to shoot until the pandemic is over.

Revealed Here’s why the Kartik Aaryan starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 shoot is delayed

A source very close to the project told me, “A major schedule of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 in Jaipur was shut down in March 2020, and the unit had to disperse hastily amidst the pandemic scare. After the lockdown ended, director Anees Bazmi informed the cast and crew that the shooting would resume. But Tabu, who plays a major part in the film, refused to return, arguing that she was not feeling secure or safe shooting while the pandemic prevailed. The producers were left with no choice but to postpone shooting indefinitely.”

It’s good to see that Tabu’s wishes are respected. And that she has not been replaced by another actress. Just goes to prove, Tabu is irreplaceable.

Samikssha Batnagar returns to small screen after 4 years with Zee TV’s Hamariwali Good News

Zee TV’s primetime drama Hamariwali Good News presents a heart-warming story showcasing a unique role reversal between a daughter-in-law - Navya (Srishti Jain) and her mother-in-law - Renuka (Juhi Parmar) to give their family the much-awaited Good News. While we've seen a lot of drama take place at the Tiwari house over the last couple of weeks, it looks like actor Samikssha Batnagar’s entry into the show is going to turn the whole tale on its head.

Samikssha Batnagar returns to small screen after 4 years with Zee TV’s Hamariwali Good News

The popular actress has been a part of several top shows in the past, however, she has been away from the small screen for four years now. She had taken a break from television and tried to explore some new avenues. But it looks like Samiksha has made a comeback to TV once again with Zee TV’s Hamariwali Good News. The actress will be seen playing the role of Vrunda and her entry in the show is going to change the dynamics in the Tiwari household.

Till now, Mukund (Shakti Anand) has been under the influence of his sister, Sumitra. However, everything is set to change after Renuka gets Vrunda to their house. It sure looks like the latter is all set to expose Sumitra’s long-kept secret, leaving everyone shocked. In fact, it will be an eye-opener for Mukund and the Tiwari family.

Talking about entering the show, Samikssha mentioned, “It is an honour for me to work with Zee TV once again, especially on a unique show like Hamariwali Good News. The show is actually my comeback on Television after four long years. I had shifted my focus to films and I did a couple of interesting Hindi movies including Poster Boys where I was paired opposite Bobby Deol. While I was doing films, I was getting several opportunities from TV, but I wanted something challenging to make my comeback on the platform and that's when this part for Hamariwali Good News came to me. In the show, I am seen as Vrunda, who is a simple yet smart girl. She has different shades to her and I am sure she will leave everyone speechless after making a huge revelation about Sumitra. I am sure the audience will love Vrunda and they will surely connect with the character, I am giving my 100 per cent to justify my character and can't wait for everyone to see me on the small screen once again.”

Hrithik Roshan – Deepika Padukone front runners to play Ram and Sita in Madhu Mantena’s Rs. 300 crore project Ramayan

There have been a number of screen adaptations of the Ramayan. But none to match the scale, expanse and expense of producer Madhu Mantena’s interpretation of the epic which is all set to start filming shortly.

Hrithik Roshan – Deepika Padukone front runners to play Ram and Sita in Madhu Mantena’s Rs. 300 crore project Ramayan

Mantena who recently bought over the shares of Phantom Films from his partners Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Vikas Bahl is all set to fly solo, and his dream project Ramayan would be his auspicious flag-bearing project.

According to sources, Mantena’s big-screen Ramayan would be in 3D and budgeted at Rs 300 crores. Nitesh Tiwari, who directed Aamir Khan in Dangal, will hold the directorial reins. The film would be of inordinate length, as no aspect of the Holy Scripture would be left undermined or left out. Or, Mantena may release the grand epic as two full-length feature films.

Informs the informed source, “These are sensitive times. And the last thing the Ramayan needs is an underwhelming treatment or a revisionist screenplay. Mantena has deployed several researchers to project absolute accuracy and preserve complete sanctity in his film version of the venerated epic.”

The cast of A-listers is now being finalized. But we can tell you Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone are front-runners for Ram and Sita. Ravi Udyawar who directed Sridevi’s last film Mom will also be associated with what promises to be an epic in every sense.

Tandav controversy: Saif Ali Khan's mother Sharmila Tagore says she's worried; here's why

The escalating situation regarding the legal issues faced by the Tandav team has seriously stressed out Saif Ali Khan’s family, especially his mom. The 76-year old icon Sharmila Tagore is worried about which way the legal processes against Tandav will go, now that the honourable court has denied anticipatory bail to all concerned.

Tandav controversy Saif Ali Khan's mother Sharmila Tagore says she's worried; here's why

Sources say Sharmilaji’s health has suffered since the Tandav controversies broke out.

“Saif and Kareena are expecting a baby in February. The last thing they need at this time is such a terrible crisis. Sharmilaji is deeply concerned at the way the whole episode has panned out. She has often told Saif to be discreet with his public statements and cautious about the projects he takes on,” says a source very close to the family.

Apparently, after the Tandav experience Saif has decided to run all the scripts offered to him through his vastly experienced mother (who knows her Satyajit Ray as well as her Manmohan Desai) before saying yes or no.

In a recent interview with me, Sharmilaji while speaking on Saif’s choice of roles had said, “He isn’t afraid to take risks as an actor. He has always been unconventional in selecting parts. That could get tricky at times.”

SCOOP: Ranveer Singh hikes his fees; charges Rs. 50 crores for Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus

Bollywood Hungama has been the first to break the news about Ranveer Singh and Rohit Shetty collaborating on another film after Simmba, this time around a comedy. Right after that, we revealed that the film, Cirkus, will be on the lines of Angoor and will feature Ranveer Singh in a double role. Some days later, it was again Bollywood Hungama who revealed that Jacqueline Fernandez, Pooja Hegde and Varun Sharma have come on board the film and now, we are again the first to inform you about the remuneration structure of Ranveer Singh for the film.

SCOOP Ranveer Singh hikes his fees; charges Rs. 50 crores for Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus

“Ranveer Singh has become one of the most bankable names in today’s time and his market value is on the rise with every passing film. For Cirkus, he has charged an acting fee of Rs. 50 crores, and he is expected to hike his fees with the success of every passing film,” a trade source told Bollywood Hungama.

That’s not all, the actor has also been vocal about his stance for theatrical releases, and the reason for this hike in fees is because he is amongst the rare actors who can assure a certain amount of returns even in these uncertain times, given the rising popularity. “The film is being shot at a brisk pace in Mumbai and is being readied for a Winter 2021 opening. The idea is to wrap up the entire film by March and then move on to the post production, since it’s a period film set in the 60s and almost the entire film is being shot in studio,” the source further shared.

Charging Rs. 50 crores for the film, Ranveer would have shot for approximately 75 days, which means, his per day acting fees stands at approximately Rs. 66 Lakhs, making him one of the highest paid actors in today’s time. The actor is at present awaiting the release of 83 and Jayeshbhai Jordaar, which are locked and awaiting a proper theatrical window.

Clash of the Dawoods: Farhan Akhtar versus Ram Gopal Varma

Two leading filmmakers are rushing to the streaming platform with bio-series on Dawood Ibrahim. While Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's Excel Entertainment’s series is based on investigative journalist author Hussain’s Dongri To Dubai, Ram Gopal’s Varma’s D Company is based entirely on his own research.

Clash of the Dawoods Farhan Akhtar versus Ram Gopal Varma

Apparently, Excel’s excursion to Dawood’s territory began shooting before the pandemic. No information is available on its progress. I asked the author Hussain Zaidi and he said he had no idea of the progress on the project.

Says Ram Gopal Varma, “I honestly don’t know what they are making. I read Dongri To Dubai which is very anecdotal in nature, like piecing together a number of crime columns published in newspapers. Also the subject matter of my series D Company is in the public domain. It’s the understanding and interpretation which will differ. Anyway may the best man win.”

Incidentally these are not the only cinematic efforts on Dawood. Nikhil Advani made D Day where Rishi Kapoor played the dreaded gangster.

“I’m hoping this will be the year of big-screen entertainers”, says Vaani Kapoor

Vaani Kapoor has three massive films lined up for release this year. She is eagerly waiting for the release of Shamshera, in which she has been paired opposite Ranbir Kapoor, BellBottom will see her opposite Akshay Kumar and in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, she is Ayushmann Khurrana’s love interest. The versatile actress hopes that her big films contribute to bringing people back to the theatres.

“I’m hoping this will be the year of big-screen entertainers”, says Vaani Kapoor

“I’m hoping this will be the year of big-screen entertainers! People are waiting for the virus to be under control and with the vaccines, the confidence of the people will slowly build. They would want to go back to doing the things that they used to. People are missing many experiences that made them happy and we are a society that thrives on community hangouts,” says Vaani.

She adds, “Community celebrations will come back in a big way and for Indians going to a theatre to watch a movie with friends and family is a huge thing. That’s going to make a big comeback. They would want to come back to soak in an experience.”

Vaani is certain that new, disruptive content will play an important role in bringing people back to the theatres as she expects the taste of the audience to have changed during the pandemic. She says, “They (audience) would want to watch films that are new, fresh and clutter-breaking. The taste and preference of the audience must have changed because of the coronavirus and they would only want to come to theatres to watch something that tells them a grand, new, compelling story! So, I’m really confident that the films that are lined up for release will do that.”

Armie Hammer's ex Paige Lorenze claims he left her with bruises, carved an 'A' on her body amid cannibalism controversy

Actor Armie Hammer is in the midst of a major cannibalism and abuse controversy. It all began with an Instagram user who revealed some alleged sexually explicit chats exchanged between the actor and a woman. The alleged chats included conversations about sex fantasies, cannibalism. The screenshots blew up and soon the actor began to receive backlash.

Armie Hammer's ex Paige Lorenze claims he left her with bruises, carved an 'A' on her body amid cannibalism controversy

Soon, he exited from the film Shotgun Wedding amid the controversy. "I’m not responding to these bullshit claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic," Armie Hammer responded in a statement to Variety. "Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that."

While many chats have come out, the actor's ex-girlfriend model Paige Lorenze has made some shocking claims. Speaking to Daily Mail, she said that Armie Hammer would indulge in knife play, and “he would cut off underwear or bras and use the knife and put it all over my body.” She even went onto claim that he had carved an 'A' on her body.

“I kind of sat back and let it happen,” she revealed to Daily Mail. “I didn’t really know what to do or say … As sad as that is, I wanted him to like me and feel like I was down for what he wanted.”

“He wanted me to show them off and be proud of them. I said, ‘How am I supposed to see other people when I have bruises?’ He said, ‘That’s the point.’ I think it was a part of marking and branding," she further revealed about her bruises and that she plans to remove her scar. “He would always tell me when he got back from the gym that he was bragging to his friends about carving an ‘A’ into me,” she said.

“I have gotten a DM saying Armie had sent me photos of me tied up that I didn’t know about. I didn’t even know the photos existed or what they look like. I don’t know if I was blindfolded," she made a shocking revelation alleging her photos were sent to other people.

“There were red flags throughout the relationship. I guess I just put them to the side and he made me feel so confident at times," Paige said further adding that “he would talk about it like a traditional BDSM relationship, but it wasn’t. This was way outside and beyond that.” She says she thinks that Hammer “enjoyed hurting women, but used BDSM as a mask for this.”

A few days ago, Paige shared series of pictures on Instagram talking about fantasies after she spoke about her relationship with Armie Hammer.

Kerala High Court issues notice to Virat Kohli and Tamannaah Bhatia on plea seeking ban on online gaming

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli, actors Tamannaah Bhatia and Aju Varghese and the state government in a plea seeking ban on online gambling in the state.

Kerala High Court issues notice to Virat Kohli and Tamannaah Bhatia on plea seeking ban on online gaming

All three celebrities are brand ambassadors of the online rummy games. Pauly Vadakkan, who filed the petition in the court alleged that online gambling is now a growing menace in the state and the primary targets will be middle to low income group people who will be enticed to make easy money. He said that people who fall for these "fraud platforms" often use all of their life savings.

These platforms endorsed by celebrities, including Kohli, Bhatia and Varghese, attract their audience with fake promises while in reality the probability of such winnings are slim to none, thus making a fool of unsuspecting people, the plea said.

The petitioner highlighted that the Kerala Gaming Act 1960, does not bring within its purview any online gambling, wagering or betting activities. The plea seeks a ban or to regulate and monitor online gambling games by framing laws that include within its purview games that are conducted online by using electronic gadgets including mobile phone, computers, laptops and other communication devices.

MHA permits cinema halls to increase seating capacity from the existing 50% from February 1

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday issued fresh COVID-19 guidelines which will come into effect from February 1 and will remain in force till February 28. In the new guidelines, the Centre also allowed higher seating capacity in cinema halls.

MHA allows to increase seating capacity in cinema halls from February 1

At present, the cinema halls across India are being operated at 50% capacity. The cinema halls were permitted to reopen in mid-October last year. While the Home Ministry has allowed an increased seating capacity, it is not clear by how much it will be increased.

“Cinema halls and theatres have already been permitted upto 50% of seating capacity. Now they will be permitted to operate at higher seating capacity, for which a revised SOP will be issued by Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in consultation with MHA,” the release by the MHA read.

These new set of guidelines will bring in relief for theatre owners and exhibitors and filmmakers who have been long awaiting to release their films in the theatres.

Tandav controversy: Supreme Court refuses to grant protection from arrest to makers; says freedom of speech is not absolute

The case was heard by a bench of justices Ashok Bhushan, RS Reddy and MR Shah. Senior advocates Fali S Nariman, Mukul Rohatgi and Siddharth Luthra cited the recent judgement of the top court in Arnab Goswami's case during the hearing. "Is this way liberty should be protected in the country and FIRs are being filed across the country," Luthra said adding that the director of the web series, Ali Abbas Zafar, is being harassed.

"Your right to freedom of speech is not absolute. You cannot play the role of character that hurts the sentiments of a community," the bench said.

Nariman pointed out that the apologies have been made and still several FIRs have been filed in six states. He also said that the objectionable content has also been removed from the series. Responding to it, Justice Bhushan said , "You want the FIRs to be quashed, then why can't you approach the High Courts?" The bench said that the police can file closure reports too if apologies have been made.

Rohatgi cited Arnab Goswami case to move the top court after a violation of Article 19(1)(a). He added people get offended with anything and everything these days. "Please protect us with no coercive steps. We deleted content without any protest. Scenes have been deleted. It's a political satire," argued Rohatgi. The bench while passing the judgement refused to grant protection from arrest to the makers who have been named in the FIRs.

The web series is facing criminal cases for hurting religious sentiments and insulting religion punishable under Sections 153A and 295 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Earlier this week, the film was nominated at the Film Independent Spirit Awards under the Best International Feature category. The Disciple will soon release exclusively on Netflix and stars Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, Deepika Bhide Bhagwat, and Kiran Yadnyopavit in pivotal roles.

The Disciple is the story of Sharad Nerulkar, who devoted his life to becoming an Indian classical music vocalist, diligently following the traditions and discipline of the old masters, his guru, and his father. But as the years go by, Sharad starts to wonder whether it’s really possible to achieve the excellence he’s striving for. This is a journey of devotion, passion, and searching for the absolute in contemporary Mumbai.

Speaking about his film, director Chaitanya Tamhane said, “The story of The Disciple came from my own search for excellence and direction. It’s about how many of us follow all the rules and yet, sometimes, find that something is missing. I was honoured to get the opportunity to work with a creative genius (and my mentor) like Alfonso Cuarón - who directed Roma and Gravity. And now, not only has Netflix acquired it to stream to a discerning global audience. I’m truly grateful and humbled that global industry stalwarts have found this film worthy. A great deal of research goes into making a film and my aim as a filmmaker has always been to tell my story authentically within a dramatic framework. One also needs to afford the audience intelligence and intuition to be able to invest in your story, no matter what the cultural context may be. I’m glad this approach worked out well for The Disciple.”

Executive Producer Alfonso Cuarón said, “I believe Chaitanya is one of the most important new voices of contemporary cinema and I’m thrilled The Disciple will be able to be enjoyed by audiences all around the world.”

Pratiksha Rao, Director, Content Acquisition, Netflix India said, “We want to be the home for India’s finest films and filmmakers. As we expand our film slate and tell more diverse stories from across the country, we are thrilled to be the home for Chaitanya Tamhane's, The Disciple. The film is a beautiful story of aspiration, struggle, and self-doubt, and celebrates the magic of visual storytelling in the backdrop of Indian classical music, that we can’t wait to share with the world.”
